About Alice Ogden & Her Baskets


 
Alice Ogden of Salisbury, New Hampshire is a traditional black ash basketmaker.  Considered a master of her trade, she has been making baskets for more than 25 years.  Her baskets are especially prized by collectors all over the country for their traditional craftmanship.  None of her materials are store bought and each basket is crafted entirely of materials collected from the woods and swamps of New Hampshire and prepared by hand.  Alice's husband, Brad, is a professional logger and uses his skills to keep Alice supplied with high quality black ash and white oak trees.  Alice prepares the logs, strips the splints, and then refines and cuts the splints for basketweaving. Alice made her first basket Christmas ornament in 1993.  It was displayed on the White House Christmas Tree as part of the "Year of the American Crafts." Though the ornament for the White House Tree remains exclusive, she started a collector's series of Christmas Ornaments, "From My Tree to Yours" in 1995.  Alice and her work have been featured on television shows in New England and in publications such as The Boston Globe, the 1995-1998 Directory of Traditional Crafts in Early American Life magazine and Baskets: A Book for Makers and Collectors (1999.)

Alice is the sole maker of her baskets and every basket is a limited edition.  Though a few baskets are in stock, orders may require as much as a year to complete.  Please call or email for availability and scheduling.
